Only One Grief

Sadness comes to me
In words from newspapers
Or stories
Or lyrics to a song
Or memories
Or haunting violin music
Or images that pierce my heart
And wrench my gut
And I watch
My tears flow

And I know there is
Only one sadness
Dressed up as many griefs
Sorrow of our separation
When the one became two
Unity became multiplicity
Scratch the surface
And all sadness is loneliness

The child cries
When it leaves its mother’s womb
That is just an echo
Of the original separation
When mind forgot its wholeness
And got lost
In this DisneyEarth
Of smoke and mirrors
Where man could play
And create
And destroy

But sadness is the street lamp
That comes on at dusk
Reminding the children
That home is calling

Sadness is the unbroken thread
Winding through our lives
Until we realize
It is love–all is love
It’s time to shake
The Etch A Sketch
And wake up!
