Eldering

I love the faces
Where every line tells a story
Of a life that knows joy
But also knows worry

Faces with halted smiles
And haunted eyes
Kind and hard
Powerful and wise

Oh, the stories
Some women can tell
Of defiled innocence
And their escape from hell

Befriend an elder
Don’t judge by their cover
The more wrinkled and worn
the more to discover.

Written for Janet…a kindly old woman at the care home. I’d ask her questions about her life and her face would light up…she loved telling her stories. RIP
